PA Lottery Presents $1 Million Powerball Check to ‘Quad 15’ Office Pool in Adams County

Gettysburg – Linda Golden of Gettysburg didn’t get discouraged when the Powerball tickets she purchased for her office pool won only $4 on March 23.

Without telling her co-workers at Quad Graphics in Fairfield, she used those winnings to buy more tickets for the March 27 Powerball drawing – and the group won $1 million.

Pennsylvania Lottery officials presented a ceremonial check to Golden and several members of the “Quad 15” office pool today at the Sunoco A-Plus at 12 Deatrick Drive in Gettysburg, where Golden purchased the winning ticket.

“I’m pleased to congratulate the Quad 15 pool on their win. Teaming up to play in a workplace pool is a great way for our players to dream big while also playing responsibly,” said Lottery Executive Director Todd Rucci. “With the Powerball jackpot at $116 million for the April 24 drawing, workplace pools are springing up all over Pennsylvania.”

Golden checked her tickets after the March 27 drawing, including several tickets she had purchased just for herself, but it was a ticket she’d bought for the group that was the big winner.

“It would have been just as easy for her to claim that winning ticket as her own,” said Liz Pavelchak, a co-worker and pool member. “She’s our angel.”

“Character is what you do when no one is looking,” said Carter Stanley, another pool member. “Everyone in that pool has a good use for their share.”

The “Quad 15” winners have different plans for their winnings, ranging from paying medical bills to building new families and new homes.

“It was truly meant to be, and we are all blessed,” Golden said.

The winning ticket correctly matched all five white balls, 07-37-43-48-52, but not the red Powerball 16, for a $1 million second-tier prize, less 25 percent federal withholding. More than 22,700 other Pennsylvania Lottery Powerball tickets holders won prizes of varying amounts in the March 27 drawing.

The retailer receives a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

In the 2011-12 fiscal year, the Pennsylvania Lottery awarded more than $10.2 million in prizes to Adams County winners and contributed more than $6.3 million to programs serving the county’s older residents.

How to play Powerball: Players pay $2 and select five white balls from the first set of 59 numbers plus a single red ball, the Powerball, from a second set of 35 numbers. Players may select their own numbers using a Powerball playslip, or they may opt for computer-selected quick picks. Players must match all five numbers drawn plus the Powerball number to win the jackpot. There also are eight additional ways for players to win a cash prize.

Powerball is sold in 43 states, Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

About the Pennsylvania Lottery: The Pennsylvania Lottery remains the only state lottery that designates all its proceeds to programs that benefit older residents. The Pennsylvania Lottery reminds its players to play responsibly. Players must be 18 or older.
