Two $1 Million Powerball Tickets Sold in PA, Jackpot Rises to $203 Million

Middletown – Before the Powerball® jackpot rolled to $203 million for the Saturday, Sept. 7, drawing, two Pennsylvania Lottery Powerball tickets worth $1 million each from the Sept. 4 drawing were sold at these retailers:

• Al’s Market, 24 Braddock Ave., Braddock, Allegheny County; and
• Fresh N Quik, 906 Market St., Berwick, Columbia County.

These two winning tickets correctly matched all five white balls, 02-09-26-45-47, but not the red Powerball 11, to win individual prizes of $1 million, less 25 percent federal withholding.

The two retailers will each receive a $5,000 bonus for selling a winning ticket.

Lottery officials cannot confirm the identity of either winner until each prize is claimed and each ticket is validated. Pennsylvania Lottery Powerball winners have one year from the drawing date to claim prizes.

The Lottery encourages each holder of a winning ticket to sign the back of the ticket, call the Lottery at 717-702-8146 and file a claim at Lottery headquarters in Middletown, Dauphin County, or at any of Lottery’s seven area offices.

Claims may be filed Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lottery headquarters and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at area offices.

More than 53,700 other Pennsylvania Lottery Powerball players also won prizes in the Sept. 4 drawing.

The Powerball jackpot grew to an estimated annuity value of $203 million, or $115.5 million cash, for the Saturday, Sept. 7, drawing.

It took just nine draws for this Powerball jackpot to pass the $200 million mark. Ten years ago, it typically took 16 draws for the jackpot to reach the same level.

In fiscal year 2011-12, the Pennsylvania Lottery awarded a total of more than $216.9 million in prizes to winners in Allegheny and Columbia counties. The Lottery also contributed more than $128 million to programs that benefited older residents of those counties.

How to play Powerball: Players pay $2 and select five white balls from the first set of 59 numbers plus a single red ball, the Powerball, from a second set of 35 numbers. Players may select their own numbers using a Powerball playslip, or they may opt for computer-selected quick picks. Players must match all five numbers drawn plus the Powerball number to win the jackpot. There also are eight additional ways for players to win a cash prize.

Powerball is sold in 43 states, Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

About the Pennsylvania Lottery: The Pennsylvania Lottery remains the only state lottery that designates all its proceeds to programs that benefit older residents. Since its inception in 1971, the Pennsylvania Lottery has contributed nearly $23.7 billion to programs that include property tax and rent rebates; free transit and reduced-fare shared rides; the low-cost prescription drug programs PACE and PACENET; long-term living services; and the 52 Area Agencies on Aging, including full- and part-time senior centers throughout the state.

The Pennsylvania Lottery reminds its players to play responsibly. Players must be 18 or older.
