PA Lottery Presents Commemorative Check to Winners of $1 Million Holiday-themed Scratch-Off Ticket Sold in York County

11/22/2022
North York Boro, PA – Officials from the Pennsylvania Lottery and Big Mouth on the Run Pizza, a Lottery retailer, today presented a commemorative check to the winners of a recent $1 million holiday-themed Scratch-Off ticket called We Wish You a Merry Million. The check presentation was held at Big Mouth On The Run Pizza, 1308 North George St., North York Boro, York County, where the winning ticket was sold. The store receives a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

The winners, Tom and Mae Elliot of York County, who have been married for 36 years, say they purchased the winning ticket on Sunday, November 6, 2022.

“It all started when I went to go fill up the van with gas,” said Tom. “Then, I took my wife out to a nice lunch and remembered I had a $90 Lottery voucher. So on our way home, we stopped by the pizza place and I told the owner to give me two tickets.”

Tom said he waited to scratch the tickets until he arrived home and when he did, he called on his older son to check the ticket.

“I got a ‘Wish’ and scratched more. I looked again and couldn’t believe my eyes!” said Tom. “I yelled to my son to come over. He thought I was mad at him. Then he saw it and was shocked.”

“I lost my eyesight this year and Tom lost his mother back in January,” said Mae. “Then we lost our youngest son in August. This money doesn’t bring them back, but it’s something good that happened to us this year.”
Tom, who said he works as a tool and die maker, added that he plans to meet with a financial advisor to plan how to spend this prize.

“Congratulations to our newest millionaires, Tom and Mae,” said Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director Drew Svitko. “Our Scratch-Offs make great gifts for the holiday season, but it’s important to remember that players must be 18 and older. We also encourage the public to play responsibly, as they enjoy our entertaining games.”

The PA Lottery Scratch-Off, We Wish You a Merry Million, went on sale on October 25, 2022, and is a $20 game that offers top prizes of $1 million. This game is also featured in a second chance to win on the Pennsylvania Lottery’s #sELFie Second-Chance Drawing, which includes qualifying Fast Play and Draw Game tickets. That Second-Chance Drawing ends on January 5, 2023.

To determine if they have won a prize, players can review the ticket, scan it at a Lottery retailer or use the ticket checker feature on the Lottery’s Official App. Winners should immediately sign the back of the ticket, call the Lottery at 1-800-692-7481 and make an appointment to file a claim at the nearest Lottery office.

Prizes must be claimed and tickets validated before winners can be identified. Scratch-Off prizes expire one year from the game's end-sale date posted at palottery.com. PA Lottery Presents Commemorative Check to Winners of $1 Million Powerball® Ticket Sold in Dauphin County during Historic Drawing

11/14/2022
Harrisburg, PA – Officials from the Pennsylvania Lottery and Turkey Hill, a Lottery retailer, today presented a commemorative check to the winners of a recent $1 million Powerball® ticket, which was sold during the historic November 7th drawing. The check presentation was held at Turkey Hill, 7601 Allentown Boulevard, Harrisburg, Dauphin County, where the $1 million winning ticket was sold. The store receives a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

Woody and Kathy Raptosh, the winners of the $1 million ticket, were looking to join in on the fun last week as the Powerball® jackpot reached an all-time world record of $2.04 billion. Although a single jackpot-winning ticket was sold in California, the drawing also produced an unforgettable moment for the Raptosh family. Woody and Kathy, who live in Dauphin County, say they can’t believe this happened to them.

“I saw the Turkey Hill and stopped by. I said to the clerk, ‘Give me $20 quick pick for Powerball, got my tickets and went home,” said Woody. “I said to my wife, ‘That’s the West Hanover Township Turkey Hill that sold the $1 million winning ticket and that's where I bought my ticket.’”

Woody said he showed his ticket to his daughter, as they both checked to see if it was a winner.

“She started screaming and saying, ‘No way, no way!’ It took me longer to read the numbers until I realized we had the winning ticket,” said Woody.

“I was in the bedroom and heard my daughter scream. I thought, ‘What is happening?’” said Kathy, Woody’s wife. “He said, ‘Kathy check this out!’”

“My heart was racing!” said Woody, who plans to visit a financial advisor. Woody said that after 35 years of working for the Commonwealth as a civil engineer, he’s ready to retire and this will help.

“We can also do some home improvements and help the kids,” added Woody.

In addition to the Raptosh family, the historic jackpot was also a big winner for older residents in Pennsylvania. It is estimated that the jackpot run generated nearly $70 million in profit that will go to programs that benefit older Pennsylvanians. The November 7th drawing also produced five other winning tickets that were worth $100,000 each.

“Congratulations to Woody and his wife Kathy for winning $1 million from Powerball and for being part of history,” said Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director Drew Svitko. “As the Pennsylvania Lottery continues to celebrate 50 years, we’re recognizing players like Woody and Kathy who are helping us generate funds for programs that benefit older Pennsylvanians.”

Prizes for Draw Games (including PICK games, Treasure Hunt, Cash 5, Match 6, Powerball® and Mega Millions®) can be collected up to one year from the drawing date. Lottery prizes more than $5,000 are subject to applicable withholding. Visit palottery.com to review rules, chances of winning and learn how to play our traditional and online games.
