PA Lottery Presents $2 Million Powerball Check to Workplace Pool in York County

York – Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director Sil Lutkewitte today presented a ceremonial check for $2 million to 10 members of a workplace lottery pool in York, the winners of a Powerball with Power Play® prize for the Oct. 22, 2014 drawing.

The winners work at Industrial Distribution Group, which is located just across the street from the store where the winning ticket was sold, the Sunoco A-Plus Market at 3167 N. Susquehanna Trail. The retailer hosted today’s celebration event.

“I’m pleased to congratulate the ‘IDG Friends’, our newest Powerball winners, on their $2 million prize,” Lutkewitte said. “These friends already know that playing in a pool is a great way to have fun chasing a big prize while playing responsibly.”

The winning ticket matched all five white balls drawn, 29-30-40-42-50, but not the red Powerball 16, and added Power Play®, which boosted the prize to $2 million, less 25 percent federal withholding. After federal taxes, each group member will receive a $150,000 share of the prize.

The coworkers have been playing lottery games as a group for nearly 10 years, with each person contributing $2 per week and taking turns buying tickets.

Group member Stephanie first became aware of their good fortune when she checked her copies of the tickets on the morning after the drawing. Just to be certain, coworker Stacia ran across the street to scan the ticket at the store.

“We won $2 million!” Stacia yelled as she bolted back into the office, moments later.

Group members took turns holding the winning ticket so that they each could say they had held $2 million in their hands. The individuals have different plans for their winnings, which include paying off loans, making home improvements and planning for retirement.

The retailer receives a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

In the 2012-13 fiscal year, in addition to awarding more than $69.8 million in prizes to winners across York County, the Pennsylvania Lottery contributed more than $27.7 million to programs serving the county’s older residents.

How to play Powerball: Players pay $2 and select five white balls from the first set of 59 numbers plus a single red ball, the Powerball, from a second set of 35 numbers. Players may select their own numbers using a Powerball playslip, or they may opt for computer-selected quick picks. Players must match all five numbers drawn plus the Powerball number to win the jackpot. There also are eight additional ways for players to win a cash prize.

Purchasing the $1 Power Play option allows a winner to increase lower-tier prizes by a factor of 2, 3, 4 or 5, depending on the Power Play number drawn. The jackpot and the Match 5 prize are not multiplied. The Match 5 prize with the Power Play option is set at $2 million. It is $1 million without Power Play.

Powerball is sold in 44 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In Pennsylvania, tickets are sold until 9:59 p.m. on drawings nights, Wednesday and Saturday.
